Here at Our Lady of Walsingham, we are using the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme to get children off to a flying start with their English. RWI is a method of learning based upon letter sounds and phonics, and we use it to aid children in their reading and writing.
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc is a comprehensive synthetic phonics programme that teaches reading, writing and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7 but can be used as an intervention program for children in Key Stage 2.
When using RWI to read the children will:
learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts.
learn to read words using Fred Talk (Follow the link for further information about Fred Talk)
read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out.
show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions.
Five key principles underpin the teaching in all Read Write Inc. sessions:
Purpose – know the purpose of every activity and share it with the children.
Participation – ensure every child participates throughout the lesson. Partnership work is fundamental to learning.
Praise – ensure children are praised for effort and learning, not their ability.
Pace – teach at an effective pace and devote every moment to teaching and learning.
Passion – be passionate about teaching so children can be engaged emotionally.
How Does Read Write Inc Work at Our Lady of Walsingham?
The children at Our lady of Walsingham are assessed regularly and then matched very carefully into reading ability groups. The children are taught the programme for approximately 40 minutes - 1 hour every day.
Children will learn the sounds in order beginning with set 1, set 2 and finally set 3. As they increase their phonic knowledge the books become more challenging.
In Reception, the focus of the lesson is reading, which includes decoding, blending and comprehension skills. When children successfully complete the programme, which varies according to the age and stage the child is at, they continue in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 with the daily lesson moving onto the Language and Literacy programme.
During this lesson, comprehension skills are further developed and skills in spelling, punctuation and grammar are taught.
